So you say you want to look after our Australian designers? Yeah? Because without them where would the fashion industry be? Do I hear you right? Well, listen carefully. Yes we should support our designers, but it does come at a cost.
Save your money fashionistas and buy real top notch garments that you're not going to want to throw away at the end of each season. If you buy designer, you are pretty much assured you're buying a top quality garment, made from materials that feel good, look good and stand the test of time.
OK, so you say it's too expensive. I understand that, but before you rule this out as an option for you, please hear me out. Add up the total cost of the garments you have purchased during each season from mass-produced chain stores and calculate how much you money you have wasted because you've had to throw them out at the end of the season. That money could have paid for a silk blouse instead, created by x designer.
Hear it from me, I've learned the hard way. Well, never again! That's why you won't see me buying from chain stores. No, I'm definitely not a snob, I'm smart & think about what I'm purchasing. I think more like an investor, rather than like someone who wastes their money.
So, my final message is this- save, save, save and support our designers! Buy yourself a garment that is worth waiting for from an Australian designer & you'll love & cherish that garment for the rest your life. You'll also have the satisfaction in knowing you have supported an Aussie designer who has worked bloody hard to create that beautiful garment. A win-win situation, I say.

I just found your blog when trying to look for Melbourne cup inspiration! :) I'm a fellow blogger too and totally understand your POV when it comes to designer clothes. Save to splurge, it's all about cost per wear!
ReplyDeleteHowever, also because I'm a broke uni student, it's slightly harder for me to shop designer. The rational side of me tells me to save for a car and my phone bills, than to splurge now for that amazing Goot dress I'd probably only wear once a year. What do you think? Do you have any suggestions or a way out of balancing both? Or should I just wait till I get a full time job?

DeleteIn so far as affording designer fashion when you're a student and have other commitments, I wouldn't suggest going for something en trend, per se, but instead sticking to something that's more classic, that you can wear more then once, that gives you pleasure when you wear it and will stand the test of time quality wise. Say, a classic LBD by an Australian designer, such as Yeojin Bae. That would definitely be worth saving up for and would be a great investment too. Check out the sales both online and in store.
